Welcome to Signature Chauffeured Cars
Melbourne’s cruise season is under way. Crown Princess berthed at Station Pier on Sunday 11 October 2026 to open the 2026–27 season, and ships will keep arriving every few days until 20 May 2027. Around 120,000 passengers are expected to pass through the pier across 63 ship visits
If you are sailing from Melbourne, or meeting someone coming off a ship, the last kilometre is where plans tend to come unstuck. Station Pier has very little parking, no luggage storage and firm rules about where cars can wait. Below is how the pier works on ship days, which ships start and finish their voyages here, and how to plan a cruise ship transfer from home, your hotel or the airport.
The season opened on 11 October 2026 and runs until 20 May 2027. Ports Victoria expects 63 ship visits and roughly 120,000 passengers arriving and departing through Station Pier. The busiest stretch runs from mid-December to early April, when ships call several times a week and some days see two vessels alongside at once. Transport Victoria publishes the full schedule, and it does change, so check it close to your sailing date.
Most ships that visit Melbourne are on transit calls: passengers come ashore for the day and sail on that evening. Transfers matter most on turnaround days, when one voyage ends and the next begins at Station Pier, and passengers are carrying full luggage in both directions. A partial turnaround means some guests finish their cruise in Melbourne while others stay on board and new guests join.

Station Pier is at 6 Waterfront Place, Port Melbourne, about four kilometres from the CBD. On ship days only ticketed passengers and authorised staff are allowed onto the pier during embarkation. Where the cruise line approves it, private cars, chauffeur cars and taxis can drive onto the pier to drop off embarking passengers. Everyone stays in the vehicle until the drop-off point, and the car leaves the pier straight afterwards.
In practice, a chauffeured drop-off takes you and your bags to the drop-off point rather than leaving you at the gate. Aim to arrive inside the check-in window your cruise line gives you. Turning up early will not get you on board sooner, and there is nowhere to leave luggage while you wait.
Arriving passengers leave the pier through the Gatehouse and are met in Waterfront Place. Anyone collecting a passenger privately must wait in the car park at the entrance to Station Pier, not on the pier itself. When needed, a taxi rank is set up on the pier on ship days. Ports Victoria’s passenger information page sets out the current rules.
Disembarkation is staggered by deck and luggage group, so the time you actually walk out can run well past the ship’s arrival time. A chauffeur who has the ship name and your disembarkation group can time the pickup to you rather than to the ship, and waits in the car park as the pier rules require
Very little. A limited number of short-term spaces are available in the Waterfront Place precinct beside the pier, and charges apply. There is no luggage storage on the pier, unattended bags are not permitted, and there are no car rental desks nearby. If a friend is driving you, plan on a drop-off rather than parking to see you off.
Yes, with caveats. Tram 109 runs between the city and Beacon Cove, a 560-metre walk from the cruise terminal. On many ship days Bus 109 runs an express shuttle from the terminal to Southbank in about 15 minutes, but it is not provided on standalone turnaround days. The shuttle is designed for day visitors exploring the city, not for passengers arriving with suitcases for embarkation, which is the main reason people sailing from Melbourne book a car.
Plenty of passengers fly in on the morning of embarkation. It can work, but leave a generous margin: domestic delays are common and the ship will not wait. Outside peak hour, the drive from Melbourne Airport to Station Pier usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes, and longer in weekday traffic.
Since 6 October 2026, private cars collect Terminal 1, 2 and 3 passengers from the new T123 Transport Hub rather than the terminal forecourt. A pre-booked chauffeur on an airport transfer meets you inside the terminal instead, tracks your flight and takes the bags, which removes one more handover from a tight day. Our guide to Melbourne Airport’s new pick-up and drop-off zones explains what changed.
If you can, land the day before. A night in the city or Port Melbourne followed by a short hotel transfer to the pier the next morning is the lower-risk option, and a spare day leaves room for a private Great Ocean Road tour before or after the cruise.
Four details make a cruise transfer run smoothly: the ship’s name and sailing date, your check-in window or disembarkation time, the number of passengers, and how many suitcases you are bringing. Luggage, more than head count, decides the vehicle.
Two travellers, standard luggage: an executive sedan such as the Mercedes E-Class.
Larger cases or up to four passengers: a luxury SUV such as the Mercedes GLE or Audi Q7.
Families and small groups: the Mercedes V-Class, with room for passengers and luggage together.
Groups sailing together: a Mercedes Sprinter or coach hire keeps everyone and every bag in one vehicle.
Signature Chauffeured Cars runs 24 hours a day, and every quote includes taxes and tolls. For the return leg, your chauffeur waits in the Station Pier car park and stays in touch by phone while you work through disembarkation.
